Each year the P.E. staff administers physical fitness tests to the students at Washington Middle School. The students are tested twice each year; once in the fall and again in the spring. Described below are the tests that are used and information that details what each test is measuring. The TriFit assessment machine is a state of the art piece of equipment that not only accurately processes data but also makes the testing procedure very efficient.

Tri Fit provides teachers with the ability to quickly and accurately evaluate student fitness levels while teaching health and wellness concepts. Health assessment products enable teachers to track and document their students health status as they equip their students with the knowledge to sustain lifetime fitness.

Pacer

The pacer test is to measure cardiovascular endurance. It is a paced shuttle run done to music. The music starts out slow as does the students' pace. As the music progresses and speeds up so does the students' pace until they can no longer continue.

The 60 second sit-up test is just what it is called, each student has 60 seconds to do as many sit-ups as they can possibly do. This test measures muscular endurance.

Body height and weight are used in calculating many of the equations in the TriFit software including the body mass index(BMI). As the BMI becomes larger, so also does the risk of a variety of diseases, such as cardiovascular complications, diabetes, and renal disease. The Surgeon General has defined being overweight as having a BMI between 25 and 30, with obesity defined as a BMI in excess of 30; this value corresponds to a moderate category of risk. There are limitations of BMI.

The Bicep Strength test is used with the TriFit unit. The scale is used for administering the bicep strength test. This test is valid for individuals over the age of five. This test will provide feedback regarding the amount of improvement each student makes on their muscular strength throughout the school year.

Displaying weight, body fat percentage and body mass index (BMI), the Tanita BF-350 is fully integrated with the TriFIT system and is a non-invasive way to measure body fat, which means it requires no touching of the student. It uses bioimpedance to calculate body fat and lean mass. The Tanita measures body fat by sending a small electrical signal through one foot to the other foot. This measures the impedance, otherwise known as electrical resistance. Water is a good conductor of electrical current. As fat contains less water than muscle, the higher the resistance, the more fat tissue. By knowing the amount of impedance along with height, weight, gender and activity level, the percent fat is calculated. The Tanita BF-350’s accuracy is +/- 3% compared with DEXA for ages 5-75. The Tanita BF-350 has a capacity of 440lbs and weighs 16.5 lbs.

The modified sit and reach test is used with the TriFit unit. The ROM is used for administering the modified sit and reach. This test is valid for individuals over the age of five. This test will provide feedback regarding the amount of improvement each student makes on their flexibility throughout the school year.
