Mr. DiNapoli
Science
Grade 8
Dear WMS 8 th grade science students,
Welcome to Mr. DiNapoli's science class. This is going to be a great year. We will have fun while learning science and there may even be some surprises along the way. In this class we will cover topics such as laboratory safety, measurement, scientific method, energy, physics, motion, classification, physical properties, chemical properties, cycles of nature, weather, atmosphere, genetics, reproduction, solar system, planet earth, microscopy, ball and ramp lab, density, and human body systems. I am interested to know if there is any topic not listed above that you would be interested in learning about.
Class Rules: You the student must follow all school rules at all times. They are listed up front to remind you. In addition you must follow the team 7/8 rules also listed up front. We will also add to that some science class rules too. We can work together to develop a small list of rules and consequences for breaking those rules.
Grading: I want to see each and every student do well in this class, but that is going to require hard work from you. There will be six parts to your grade; participation (5%), homework (15%), quizzes (15%), lab reports (30%), tests (30%), and special projects (5%). Missed assignments can be made up and bad grades can be improved. If an assignment is not done when it is due you can hand it in latter that day for a 25% deduction. Any day after that is a 35% deduction. All grades can be improved by redoing the work and handing it in again. Your new grade will be an average of the first grade and the second grade. No multiple re-dos, only one per grade. Your grades will be updated and posted at the beginning of each week so you know where you are at and there are no surprises.
The goal of this class is to gain a better understanding of science topics and at the same time have fun doing it. I will be asking for your help in connecting the science we learn in class to real life situations. We will be doing at least one research/oral presentation project to help us make these connections.
