The verb ser - to be is used in situations that are relatively permanent.
This is opposed to the verb estar - to be which is used in situations that are considered temporary.
The forms of the verb ser are:
Yo soy - I am
Tu eres - you are (informal)
el es - he is
ella es - she is
Ud.(usted) es - you are (formal)
nosotros somos - we are
nosotras somos - we are (girls only)
ellos son - they are
ellas son - they are (girls only)
Uds.(ustedes) son- you all are

Ser is used in the following situations:
1. to express nationality (ex. Yo soy cubano.)
2. to express origin (ex. Yo soy de Cuba.)
3. to describe personality (ex. Yo soy generoso.)
4. to describe physical traits (ex. Yo soy alto.)
5. to express profession (ex. Yo soy doctor.)
