Jamestown Public Schools Music Program
The halls are alive with the sound of music at Jamestown Public Schools. Walk into any of the elementary and middle schools or the high school, and you are bound to see students performing music in all its forms. Music in the Jamestown Schools dates back to 1867 when Samuel G. Love, Principal of the Jamestown Union School and Collegiate Institute, incorporated vocal music into the school curriculum. Since those early years, music has played a vital role in the education of Jamestown students and has enriched our community.
"There is a long-standing tradition of music in our schools," said JHS Choral Director, Brian Bogey (retired). "Grandparents and parents of our students participated in the music program when they were in the Jamestown schools and it is an important family tradition. The JPS Music Department is a symbol of pride for the community and for the students themselves."
The rich heritage of the music department continues today due to the dedication and hard work of music teachers, students, and administration. It also benefits from the tremendous support of music parents and the Jamestown community. Each level from elementary school to high school offers music instruction to our students. New York State require music as part of the Arts Standards. The music department has a curriculum, just like math and science, and they also have assessments to test each individual student in various musical skills. Students agree that music has enhanced their studies and life.
Jamestown Public Schools is lucky to have a strong music program. Many students go on to pursue music as a career and even more keep it as a hobby. Music, through education, has truly become a life-long learning endeavor.
"I get excited teaching students about music," said Mr. Coccagnia. "I’m able to help students build memories and experiences that will last forever."
