Technology Education: A Global Imperative

Faced with the inevitable growth and dominance of technology in the world today, we have been searching for effective strategies to prepare our students for the culture and workplace of the 21st Century. Technology in the classroom is no longer considered a luxury among teachers and students. It is now an imperative, requiring innovative approaches to learning and teaching, new priorities in curriculum and instructional planning, and, in many cases, the retraining of our teachers.

In response to the technology imperative, the Jamestown Public Schools have begun to incorporate technology into classrooms in two significant ways. First, we are using computers in ever increasing numbers as an instructional tool. Second, we are incorporating technology education into the standard curriculum to enable students, from the earliest grades on, to understand, apply, and assess the important technologies that will one day dominate their lives.

The Jamestown Public Schools has developed and is continually expanding a comprehensive technology education program that teaches students the principles, applications, career opportunities, and impact of a broad range of technologies.

Through the Jamestown Tech Academy, opening September 2003, our students will learn how to conceptualize, experiment, and examine the principles of various clusters of technology: Tech World Manufacturing, Career Explorations, Tech World Info Systems, Land and Marine Mechanics, Computer A+ Training, and Travel/Tourism Certification classes.

The Tech Academy affords us many different avenues of training through our existing httpTechnology Course Offerings allowing us to provide for our httpAdult/Continuing Education and httpGED/ABE Programs. Our partnership with the Chautauqua County Workforce Development Program and httpYouth Apprenticeship Program also offers our students unique opportunities to experience the world of work.

Our students and community will better understand and be able to assess the impact of technology on society today and to apply their knowledge to future educational and career choices.
