THE YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
The Youth Apprenticeship Program is designed to provide immediate practical application of skills learned in the classroom. By working at the job site, students see the benefit of math, science, English, technology and other academic classes as they work beside highly skilled employees. Students are provided with both coaches and mentors who guide their learning while linking it to information they learn at their high school. These students are a step ahead of the rest with real world experience and work ready skills.
Program
The student will be trained to do a variety of tasks of increasing complexity by rotations in various areas at the business site. In addition, the student will learn safety rules, communication skills, teamwork, problem solving techniques, and an orientation to the world of work.
The Youth Apprenticeship Program offers an opportunity for four years of training starting in the student’s junior year in high school and extending through two years at Jamestown Community College or Jamestown Business College. The student can pursue an appropriate associate degree in one of the technical or business fields offered by the college or at JBC. In high school the student will work at the job site no more than 12 hours per week. While in college those hours can be extended at the discretion of the business. The program can be modified for those students who are thinking in terms of a four-year college degree.
