About Jamestown High School

Jamestown High School serves 1600 students in a downtown campus that includes two gymnasiums and a full size swimming pool. Other facilities which enrich the academic program are the Guidance Career Center, several computer labs, and the library.

The academic successes of the graduating class certify the excellence of the educational program. Eighty percent of the graduates go on to two and four year colleges. Local scholarships totaling over $120,000 are given annually to JHS graduates.

Students are involved in a variety of Advanced Placement classes in the areas of English, mathematics, science, art, and social studies. Collaboration with Jamestown Community College also affords students enhanced opportunities for course selection. Jamestown High School also participates in several foreign exchange programs.

JHS students compete successfully on local as well as national and even international levels. The Red Raider Marching Band was selected over hundreds of applicants to march as the "Santa Band" in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1995, their third appearance in the parade. The band has also marched in the Rose Bowl Parade and traveled to Florida and Virginia, just to name a few. The A'Cappella Choir has performed internationally, traveling throughout Europe, as well as performing in New York City's St. Patrick's and St. Peter's Cathedrals. The chorus also performs at many community functions, most notably during the Christmas season. The Red Raider Football team has competed on the State level several times, winning the State Championship in 1994 and 1995. The team has been ranked among the Top 25 High School Football Teams in the nation. Students also excel in ice skating and ice hockey. The Lakers Ice Hockey Team is consistently successful at championship meets, and skating club members compete at the national level annually.

In the classroom, JHS students also excel. Economics students have assessed local business stock market quotes and established the "Jamestown Industrial Average." They have also developed a four-year equity fund for investment opportunities in the South American market. A collaborative project between city agencies and the Class of 1999 focused on the development of the Chadakoin River as a resource. This collaboration has allowed students to be involved in community service projects as well as in the development of knowledge about the political process. The Chadakoin Project also included a mentoring program through which students are linked with professionals in an activity-oriented program.

JHS also has a nationally-recognized apprenticeship program. Students are trained in the skills and behaviors of the workplace through a curriculum-oriented program focusing on their own educational development. You can find out about the JHS Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP) by visiting their site.
