One type of small group reading instruction is guided reading.  Students have the opportunity to practice effective reading strategies on texts at their instructional level with the guidance of the teacher.  The teacher and a small group of children talk, think and question their way through a book together.  The teacher must consider each child’s competencies, interests, and experiences; be able to determine the supports and challenges offered by a book; and accept the role of supporting learning rather than directing teaching.  In Guided Reading, children read the story by themselves and problem-solving their way through the text.  It is not the teacher reading to them, nor is it round robin reading.
