J.H.S. has a proud tradition of athletic excellence. Our football team has won three state championships (1994, 1995, 2000), as well as 10 section 6 and 14 divisional titles in its storied history. The boys basketball program (8 sectional championships, 22 sectional championship game appearances, and 11 league championships) and girls basketball program (3 straight sectional and league championships from 2005-2008) have been dominant in recent years. In addition, we have very strong programs in baseball (league champions in 2008), wrestling, bowling (28 league championships), and golf (18 league championships). Other varsity sports include boys and girls soccer, boys and girls swimming, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls indoor track, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls track & field, boys lacrosse, softball, volleyball, and cheerleading.
Our young athletes are able to develop their skills by competing on the modied level in 7th and 8th grade at our three middle schools (Jefferson, Persell, and Washington). These student-athletes are able to play on the following teams: boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track, girls volleyball, softball, wrestling, football, and cheerleading.

Mission Statement of JPS Athletics...
The mission of the JPS Athletic Dept. is to create an educational and competitive experience within an atmosphere of sportsmanship. We provide equal opportunity for male and female student-athletes by offering a variety of sport offerings. Our goal is for every athlete to have a quality experience through the promotion of positive values and behaviors as a result of interscholastic athletic participation. In addition, every athlete should develop a sense of pride in personal and team achievement as well as learn the importance of commitment, teamwork, and goal setting.

The JPS athletic department comprises less than 7/10 of 1% of the total school budget (0.68%). This is one of the biggest “bangs for the buck” that our school district and community gets from it’s investment in the athletic participation of the youngsters in our district.
